How often do you think about your future?

What do you really want to get done in this lifetime? You are free to create whatever you want in this world. The more specific you are, the easier it is to plan. So, what does your future hold?

There are people who know exactly how their future is going to look like, they have been planning it since they were little children and have not changed it since. Others are too scared to think about it, so they prefer to ‘Live in the moment‘ and go with the flow. The third category, think about the future often and design it as they go and as they change or develop themselves.

Which category are you in?

Until 2 years ago, I was in the first category, I knew exactly how my future is going to look like:

* I found it extremely powerful and great, to be a workaholic on heels in a 12 stories building

This whole beautiful picture of a great future (in my childish eyes) changed when I met my wonderful boyfriend (we have been dating for almost 7 years) and when I realized that being in a relationship is far more rewarding than being alone. Also, after I worked in a big multi-level company,  80h/week and saw time I had for other things, and how my body changed during that period, I knew I could not wish this to be my ideal future. I started to get fat because I had money to buy all the food I loved (like Mc Flurry almost every day, or a flavored latte with cream) and no time to cook fresh food, or go to the gym, or even for a walk.

Eating prepackaged food was convenient, good tasting and available whenever I wanted. In 3 months, I added 20 pounds (10 kg) and nothing fit me. I started to become very frustrated and my relationship started to suffer. I was very unhappy with the way I looked and had no time for my boyfriend – and the little time we had I was acting weird. (I feared he would not want me or desire me because I was not skinny anymore and he is a fit guy who wanted me to be fit and work out, so I was pushing him away) – keep in mind all I wanted was to be skinny, not healthy and not fit, when all he wanted was me to be fit and work out to be healthier.

After 3 months, I knew this kind of life is not for me, plus the stress was way more than I could handle and I realized then, that having a bigger paycheck in a company will require a bigger responsibility, which will only double or triple my stress intake.

After my whole idea of ‘perfect future‘ was destroyed, I was left hanging, not knowing ‘what do I really want?‘, so I had to start all over againin my mind, of course!

The next trap I had to get away from was the mentality of ‘Live in the moment, which most people in their 20’s face. I was reading a lot of self-developing books and all were saying the same thing ‘Live the present, focus on the present, live now…

So, this is what I did, I started focusing on the present, and not so much worrying about the future – it felt so much easier. Who cared what would I do in 2 years from now, I was focusing on the moment. The only problem was, this way of ‘living in the moment‘ is not really the one portrayed in the books, is the one people got from the books.

The real way of ‘living in the moment’ is being consciously present each second (enjoy the surroundings, the smell, the colors, the task you are doing) and having faith for the unveiling of the future you wish for yourself.

It does not mean, live now, enjoy each thing today and not care about tomorrow, or if you will have food on your plate or roof over your head. It means, being grateful for what you have/be/do each second and think highly of how your tomorrow will look like because you have faith it is going to be an awesome one, just like you have imagined.

I guess, it took me almost a year to fully understand the concept of living in the now and apply it on a daily basis. Living in a state of gratefulness, will make you happier and help you attract only amazing things, for which to be grateful for. It all starts with gratefulness and ends with desire. But in order to be grateful for something, you need to know what you want to be grateful for, so let’s think about our future and design it just the way we want it!

Because, yes, gorgeous, IT IS POSSIBLE! I have been told many things: you cannot be a health coachyou are too young, you cannot make a living out of bloggingyou are just dreaming… etc.

Present moment: I have been a full time blogger for 7 months, being able to pay my rent, my utilities, food, my school tuition, websites expenses and do what I love and have clients for my coaching practice – and yes, I am only 23 years old. If I can do it, everyone can, it is all a matter of choice, faith, ambition, determination and hard work.

So, how do you start designing your ideal future?

In order to make all your hopes and dreams happen, you must think them through and plan them. Consider this exercise I am about to give you, as a personal trainer for the muscle that sees and creates your future. #1. We start with the NOW

Write down all the things you need to get done or want to get done by:

  • The end of tomorrow
  • The end of the week
  • The end of the month
  • The end of next month

Think about the tasks you must do at work or those that are keeping you awake, like cleaning the house, or going grocery shopping, or reading a book, or going out with your friends, or watching a movie… write down all the things that come to mind. What I noticed, when I first did this exercise, a year ago, is that my list was 10 times longer for my ‘the end of tomorrow list‘ than for my ‘the end of next month list‘ – if you find yourself in the same situation, here is WHY.

Most probably, you have forgotten how to dream. You can only see the imminent things that need to get done and lost the vision of the bigger picture. BUT, no worries, strive for completion and not perfection. You will most probably do this exercise a few times in your lifetime, so you will get better at it as you go.

#2. Continue With Your Future: New Year’s Day

  • What is the year?
  • What is the year?
  • How old will you be?
  • How old will your loved ones be?
  • What are the things you want to have done by that time?

This part is very powerful because it keeps you focused on the present moment, seen in the future. Knowing how old will you be will make you realize the things you have always wanted to get done by that age and compare them with that you think is yet still possible for you to achieve.

For example, if you are doing this exercise today, after reading this article (12th of April 2015), your answer to the first question will be ‘2016‘.

#3. Keep On Going: New Year’s Day, 2 Years From Now

  • What is the year?
  • What is the year?
  • How old will you be?
  • How old will your loved ones be?
  • What are the things you want to have done by that time?

Now, we are talking, you are getting closer to creating the bottom part of your future. The base is now set, let’s build more on top.

#4. Even Further: New Year’s Day, 5 Years From Now

  • What is the year?
  • What is the year?
  • How old will you be?
  • How old will your loved ones be?
  • What are the things you want to have done by that time?

After you have done this part, your picture is 70% done. This was the hardest part, if you got here, congratulation, you are a WINNER. You already did what 90% of all people refuse to – but, your picture is still not done yet.

#5. Almost There: In 10 Years

  • What is the year?
  • What is the year?
  • How old will you be?
  • How old will your loved ones be?
  • What are the things you want to have done by that time?

You are so close to having the whole picture, keep on going! How does your future look like already, does it inspire you? Does it ignite you?

Remember: is your future and you can DESIGN IT the way you want it! Keep in mind, this exercise is for you and no one will judge for having dreams too big or too small, write from your heart and most importantly: FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT. This exercise is intended to make you feel good and excited about your future, so make it happen! Let go of the negative chatter in your mind that is on repeat telling you ‘you are crazy, this is way too unrealistic‘ – do it in spite of it, you are not your mind!

#6. You Have Reached The End: In 20 Years

  • What is the year?
  • What is the year?
  • How old will you be?
  • How old will your loved ones be?
  • What are the things you want to have done by that time?

This is the end of the exercise, now your picture is complete. If you did the whole exercise, you have probably invested some good 2 hours in this and gained clarity, confidence, vision, a sense of well-being, new ideas, new dreams, new hopes, excitement, determination, and the list might continue.

I did it twice in less than a year and some things have changed, but the BIG PICTURE is still the same, some details became clearer, some years have changed – I now believe I can achieve a lot more in less time. – you will too!

Keep in mind this is not final. Your vision of future might change in one year, but the important aspect of it is to focus on the big rocks you want to achieve and how long you think it will take to achieve them. Small details like ‘I want to live in an apartment in 2 years‘ versus ‘I want to live in my own house in 2 years‘ can be worked on over time, when you retake this exercise.
